RFTW SandBox RC Newsletter – FEB 2021 – CONTINUE THE MISSION Edition

RFTW XXXII SB RC Newsletter Header

Howdy from Texas!

Thirty years ago today, on 27 FEB 1991 several hours before zero-dark-thirty, I kissed my wife and sleeping daughter goodbye and headed in to NAS Miramar to fly an aircraft with my squadron out to the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) as we headed across the big pond to support Operation DESERT STORM.  I was standing on the edge of the precipice that many of you have faced as you started a journey that led to events that would shape your life forever.  Looking back now at the young me on that day, I had no idea that this family of RFTW warriors and patriots were on watch and on guard to provide me and my family the support I would count on so many years later.

With that in mind, I express to you all now, my RFTW Family, that I stand once again on that precipice of the unknown as we stand watch over a Mission that we all love, but which must unfortunately wait another year to be serviced by the soul restoring recharge of the Run.  We as a combined force of Veterans and Patriots are strong enough to face this challenge and CONTINUE THE MISSION through the hardship of another delay.  The Run is on the road but the Mission is in your heart – every day!  Through small group support, Reunions, individual missions to support Veterans Homes and Hospitals, contacts made to Gold and Blue Star family members and much more, we will keep this mission alive in our hearts and bring all those experiences back to share when we resume the Run.

If you haven’t already, please read our Board President’s message explaining the reasons for this anguishing decision that was inevitable under the circumstances.  You can open it HERE.

We already had in place a plan to hold the 3rd SandBox Route Virtual Briefing for all Leadership and Riders next week and I have no intention of cancelling that Briefing.  Please join me next Tuesday night at 8pm Central for this SandBox Route briefing on Zoom.  I’m planning for a large audience with many questions.  Your Route Leadership Team will be there with me to answer questions and I have invited the Board of Directors to join us as well.  Details of the meeting and the Zoom link you’ll need are shown below.

Southern Route Coordinator News – February 2021 Part 2

Normally Deja Vu experiences are fun and interesting, this one, not so much.    By now you have heard the RFTW 2021 has suffered the same fate as 2020.  It was not an easy decision to cancel again.   The Safety of our Riders and Supporters is of paramount importance.  Because of the Pandemic Restriction variances from state to state and county to county, there is no way we could execute our Route as planned.  It would be unethical for me to lead the Southern Route into situations that could potentially, cause harm and /or subject us to serious fines and penalties.  The main culprit is the draconian limitation on Group Gatherings.  Many states are as low as 10 people.

Frustrating to put it mildly.  I honestly thought that the Country would be much more open by now, and wide open by May.   The RFTW President shared a more detailed explanation in his newsletter this morning, you can read it at:

https://rftw.us/presidents-message-february-2021-part-2/

The Board of Directors has asked, and I have agreed to stay on as the Southern Route Coordinator for RFTW 2022, or until we finally put RFTW XXXII in the book.   I Hope and Pray that you ALL will be with us when we go Kick Stands Up May 18, 2022.  We have come too far to give up now.

The FNG Town Hall is still ln for Tomorrow February 27th  (see flyer below)

Also. stay tuned for upcoming information on ALL Rider Reunions.  Until then……. Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, Stay Positive

Midway – Route Coordinator- Newsletter – Feb 2020 #2

Dear Run for the Wall family,

As I am sure you have all heard by now, but if not,  it is with a heavy heart that I must let you know that the Run for the Wall has once again been cancelled for 2021.  The anticipation and excitement for the Run this May seemed to be at an all time high after the disappointing cancelation last year.  Everyone was looking forward to our mission in May and being together again.  FNGs were so excited to experience the special event that is Run for the Wall.  My heart is truly broke right now.  However, the Covid restrictions that our government has placed on us makes our event illegal in most, if not all states.  Our routes are just too large to comply.  As an organization, RFTW cannot be responsible for leading our routes into illegal situations.  The liability of doing so, could destroy RFTW’s future.  We would also put our hosts at risks of civil penalties.  See the President’s message at the link below:
https://rftw.us/presidents-message-february-2021-part-2/

The hours put in on planning our Midway route over the last two years is enormous.  It is sad that it has not been able to produce the route and mission we want to participate in and support so much.

Our hosts and communities that support our Midway route were looking forward to having us back this year.  I hate canceling on them.  They all put in so much work and money into hosting us and it would not be fair to have to cancel on them at the last minute.  I want to express my gratitude to all of them and ask for their understanding and continued support for what will hopefully be our Run in 2022.  I know it is disappointing for them as well.  They all have become like a second home to us on our route and I truly appreciate all that they do for us.

What can I say about our Midway leadership team?  You are so amazing.  Thank you for another year of fantastic leadership!  State Coordinators and Assistant Coordinators, I cannot express my appreciation and gratitude enough for all the hard work you have done all year to plan for what would have been an amazing 2021 route.  I will be counting on you heavily over the next couple of weeks to help us dismantle our route and notify all our stops and supporters.  I know that you will represent RFTW professionally and express our disappointment of the need to cancel, and our gratitude for what they do to support us. We hope to have their continued support for 2022 and beyond.  I want all our route participants, especially the FNGs to know just how difficult and important a job it is to be a State Coordinator.  We could not have our mission without them.  I hope everyone will tell them thank you for all the work they do when you see them.

I wish I could list and thank each and everyone of you in this newsletter, but that just would not be possible.  I hope you all know who much I appreciate each and every one of you.  However, I want to give a special note of appreciation to my ARC, Jerry Wilkins and our Road Guard Captain, Rick “Taildragger” Schultz.    You two guys helped me to coordinate this route across the entire country.  You both are very special to me and I appreciate everything you have done.  You were always there for me and our mission.   I am blessed to be able to call you friends.

To all of you who raised money for us, and those who donated, I thank you for your time, talents and treasure given to support our mission.  Your money will remain in the Midway route account and be allocated for the purpose it was donated for and used to support our 2022 route and riders.  I intend to give donations to Milan Elementary and the Falcon’s Children’s Home as we normally do to help support them.  I will also announce the day and time that I will hold the drawing for the “Hotel Raffle”.  That $1000 prize will be given as planned.  You sent money for the raffle and so it will take place and I will be excited to announce the winner.  I am planning on a Facebook “live” type of drawing so whoever wants can witness the drawing for the prize. This time, you may have your hotel money early for next year!

The work of dismantling the route will begin ASAP.  Then it will be time, once again, to plan our Midway route for 2022.  The first part of planning is putting our Leadership and support teams together.  I invite you all to return to your positions and hope that you will do so.  It has been a very long two years and I would like us all to stick together to finally see our route return in 2022.  We do have a fantastic team!

We will move forward with a positive attitude planning to put this route together again to make Midway 2022 the best it can be.  I cannot say enough of how proud I am of our team.  The wait will just make the mission even sweeter when we get to have it again.

I will continue to keep all of you informed throughout the coming year as we look forward to seeing everyone at reunions and other events throughout the year.

Our mission lives on all year.  Many of you will ride your own individual rides this year as some did last year.  Maybe paths will cross again sooner rather than later.

I wish you all the best.  And,  Have I told you lately?………..I love my RFTW family!

Sincerely,

Ken “Six String” Dugas

Southern Route Coordinator Great News February 2021 Part 1a

Greetings Again form the Battle Born State,

***** Fake News Alert****

I am so happily embarrassed. I just got off the phone with Patti Luttrell, Clyde’s wife. I would have talked to Clyde, but he was busy eating his dinner. I will call him shortly and I am sure that we will have an interesting conversation.

Bottom line is …. OUR Clyde Luttrell is very much alive. I was given some bad intel. No one to blame but myself. I wanted to correct this ASAP.

Southern Route Coordinator News February 2021 Part 1

Greetings from The Battle Born State,

I apologize up front for the somber tone of this newsletter.  I only wish that the good news flooded in as fast as the bad news.

Just last week I found out that Don “9 Ball” Morris passed away.  He was one of our most beloved Southern Route Riders, a Road Guard, and our 2006 Southern Route Coordinator.  He and is lovely wife Della aka “Pocket” were mainstays for many years on the Run.  Les “Easy” Williams wrote a beautiful tribute to Don in his most recent President’s Message.

Yesterday I learned that we lost Clyde “Rock” Luttrell one of Southern Route’s Tennessee State Coordinators.  You may not remember his name, but you would surely recognize his face, and we all enjoyed the fruits of his labor.  “Rock” was instrumental in organizing the Donuts & Coffee and PB&J stop in Knoxville, TN.  Definitely one of the Riders’ most anticipated stops. Please Pray for their Families that they find Peace.

Today I was told that one of our Texas riders, Hal “Grumpy” DuPuy was t-boned by an inattentive cage driver pulling out from a parking lot.  I spoke to his wife earlier; he is in stable condition and will be admitted to the hospital.  He likely has a fractured bone in his elbow and endured several x-rays and CT Scan.  They are awaiting the results.  His ride did not fare so well.  He can definitely use a whole lotta Healing Prayers.

As I write this, I realize that if my Dad was still alive, we would be celebrating his 100th birthday this month.

It is obvious that there are a great many things that are out of our control.  But one thing we can control is how we take care if ourselves.  I urge you to see your Primary Care Provider for a check-up before the Run and consider getting a Covid-19 Vaccination.  With today’s technology doctors can detect many issued before they become more serious.

On a more positive note, planning and preparations for Southern Route are moving forward.  Our State Coordinators are meeting with Supporters every day.  #RFTWStrong

Run for the Wall - We Ride For Those Who Can't

The RFTW Board of Directors is soliciting applications from riders interested in serving on the Board. There will be a number of vacancies on July 1st, 2021 due to term limits.  Because sitting members have the option of moving into vacant seats, the vacancies are not being listed by Position.

Anyone is eligible to apply, but it should be understood that the Board places a high priority on experience and past service to the Run in leadership and service positions when evaluating candidates.

If you would like to apply for a position on the Board of Directors, please submit a resume with an overview of your work history and a detailed recounting of your RFTW experience, including your FNG year, the number of times you’ve ridden with RFTW (both as a Participant and ATW), which route(s) you’ve ridden, and what leadership or service positions you’ve held.  We also ask that you submit a short cover letter explaining why you wish to join the Board.  Please send these to me at dave.klemme@rftw.us

In case you did not know, the bulk of the funding for our School / Educational Grants come from raffle ticket sales, both the 50/50 and the Prize Raffles.  Most of the prizes are donated by our Riders but some come from Companies and Groups who support the Mission.  We can always use more, so I am asking you to talk to the people that you do business with and see if they would like to donate any item(s) for our Prize or Daily Raffles.  Just bring the items with you and turn them over to one of our Rousers.  This time we will have Jessa “Baby Buzz” Mullen-Bradford as our 50/50 Rouser.  She will be very busy, so we are also looking for an Outgoing and Dedicated Raffle Rouser to share the duties.  If you are interested, please send me an email.

Southern Route Coordinator News – FNG Special Part 1

Greetings to ALL Southern Route FNGs.

All Route Coordinators (RCs) produce and publish an Introduction Video on their hub of the www.rftw.us website.  If you have not already checked them out, you should.  There is literally a ton of other information on our website (I had it weighed).  All of our RFTW Merchandise is available there, along with the Forum, Announcements and RC Newsletters.

I think everyone has felt like the “New Kid” at some time in their life, First day of high school, college, new job maybe even boot camp.  Being a “Fun New Guy or Gal: (FNG) on Run For The Wall (RFTW) is not much different.  There is a lot that you may not know, and we don’t expect that you do.  I would be a rich man if I had a nickel for every time I heard “Gee, I wish I knew that before my FNG year”.  We learn best from our experiences.  But Experience is a cruel teacher first the test, then the lesson.

The problem is that, due to time constraints, our FNG briefing in Ontario is never long enough to get to everyone’s questions.

So, we are creating an opportunity to get a head start on the process.  Starting at 2:00PM PST, Saturday, February 27, 2021 we will host an FNG Town Hall on Zoom.  We are calling ALL Southern Route FNGs to join in.  You may just hear something, that your buddy forgot to tell you.  There will be more details to follow in subsequent newsletters.

Here’s how you can help.  Email me bob.nelson@rftw.us  your questions in advance, so we can prioritize the most pressing questions first.   We will not mention your name, but we may say where you are from so include that information in your email.

Southern Route Coordinator News January 2021 Part 2 **Special**

Greetings to ALL Registered RFTW Riders.

Our Registration Team needs your help.  It seems that over 500 of us who have registered in 2020, now have items such as Driver’s License, Vehicle Registration and/or Insurance that will expire before May 19, 2021.  The good news is that we can easily correct this.  Just simply follow the directions below:

Changes that need to be made on your existing pre-registration form (new bike, updated expiration dates on license, insurance, route change, etc.) should be directed to the newly established Contact Form https://rftw.us/contact/ category.

  1. Enter your Name and Email Address.
  2. The Message box should contain ONLY CHANGES TO YOUR REGISTRATION FORM
  3. under Where should this contact be directed? Click the circle labeled “RFTW 2021 – Registration Revisions
  4.  Since you are not a robot, check the box appropriately.
  5. Submit

The registration team will monitor these contact emails, revise your existing form and re-send it to you.    They will do this until the cut-off date of April 30th, 2021.

If you see that you will NOT be participating in the 2021 Run, please complete a “Contact Form” under the same category and advise them.   They will then delete your registration, so that accurate participant numbers can be obtained.   This is critical information to the Route Coordinators, so please contact them if you are unable to go.  Thank you for your help.

Southern Route Coordinator News – January 2021 Part 1

Hi Everybody,

Well, we are only 128 days before Kick Stands Up (KSU).  The Southern Route Hotel List was posted On-Time with only one minor glitch, which was fixed before most riders even saw it.  BUT, for some reason there are a few riders who think we were still stopping in Chandler, AZ on Day 1.  The correct answer is Casa Grande, AZ.

If you have looked at our www.rftw.us website, you will have noticed that the Southern Route pre-registration number is at 455.  I really appreciate the enthusiasm, so we may be looking to expand the number of platoons rather than overcrowd.  With that said we are seeking potential volunteers within Platoon Leadership.  Applicants must have gone All The Way (ATW) at least one time, preferably on the Southern Route.  Also, you will need to have a working mounted CB Radio by KSU.  If interested contact Big Vic our Platoon Coordinator at srplatooncoordinator@gmail.com

Southern Route is looking to fill a new position if the right volunteer can be found.  Leadership Support Driver, basically a chase vehicle for Outreach Missions.  Ideally a pickup with a trailer capable of transporting 1-2 motorcycles.  The reason for a smaller rig is that many of the Outreach locations have extremely limited parking and traverse narrow and winding roads.  Please contact me for more information about this position.
